Chile has received applications from seven firms and consortiums in the first phase of awarding lithium operation contracts across six salt flats.
The government will announce the winners by March, with a working group reviewing submissions. Bidders must demonstrate lithium expertise, financial strength, and hold at least 80% of proposed mining concessions.
A second phase for six additional areas has been extended to March 7. Chile, holding the world's second-largest lithium reserves, aims to solidify its role as a top battery metal supplier despite market fluctuations. Currently, SQM and Albemarle dominate lithium production in the country.
