Malaysia Critical Minerals

Malaysia is seeking to build a sustainable critical minerals industry, presenting opportunities for U.S. companies specializing in mineral extraction, processing technologies, equipment, and environmental solutions.

The country has identified five strategic minerals, with non-radioactive rare earth elements (REEs) like Neodymium, Dysprosium, and Praseodymium being crucial for clean energy technologies. Malaysia’s rare earth reserves, valued at $168 billion, are concentrated in states like Terengganu, Kelantan, and Pahang, which hosts the world’s largest rare earth processing plant outside China, operated by Lynas.

The National Advanced Materials Technology Roadmap emphasizes expanding downstream capabilities such as refining and recycling, while environmental concerns prompt Malaysia to seek international partners for safe, sustainable mining. The government has shown interest in collaborating with U.S. firms for sector development. Interested companies are encouraged to contact Commercial Specialist Mohan Gurusamy.
